Dear Residents,
As some of you are already aware, we recently removed the clothing donation bins from the basements of B and E buildings. This wasn’t an easy decision for us to make, as these bins were obviously quite popular, based on the amount of donated items in and around the bin areas at any given time. Unfortunately, from the onset it was virtually impossible for us to commit the city to regularly scheduled pickups, resulting in unsightly and unsanitary mounds of clothes, accessories, sheets, blankets etc., around the bins. The general shutdown during the pandemic ceased pickups altogether for most of 2020. When they finally resumed, we had no more success in scheduling regular pickups than we had beforehand. This caused an unnecessary and time-consuming burden on our maintenance staff, who had to regularly discard of the items overflowing from, and spilling out of the bins.
We appreciate that these bins were a convenient and charitable resource for our residents, and a way for all of us to help the less fortunate in our community. We encourage you to continue to donate your clothing and textiles to re-fashionNYC. There are several drop-off sites located in our neighborhood and the surrounding areas. Please go to refashionNYC@dsny.nyc.gov for further information, and for the nearest drop-off locations.
